What are the general and specific understandings of student differences that may affect learning?

We had the general understanding that the students knew about the different elements of literary text. We did not give explanations about character, plot, theme, etc. because we felt they had already learned these concepts. We did ask them questions to check for understanding after they had finished their assignments.
